Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC), also known as 3-iodo-2-propynyl butyl carbamate, is a carbamate pesticide. Carbamate pesticides are derived from carbamic acid and kill insects in a similar fashion as organophosphate insecticides. They are widely used in homes, gardens, and agriculture. Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC) is used as a preservative in cosmetic products in both leave-on and rinse-off cosmetic/personal care products (3). According to information supplied to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by industry as part of the Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program (VCRP) in 2013, IPBC was being used in 942 cosmetic products.
