Iohexol is a non-ionic, water-soluble contrast agent used as a diagnostic aid in radiographic procedures, including myelography, arthrography, nephroangiography, and arteriography. Organic iodine compounds block x-rays as they pass through the body, thereby allowing body structures containing iodine to be delineated in contrast to those structures without iodine. Following intrathecal administration into the subarachnoid space, diffusion of iohexol into the cerebrospinal fluid allows visualization of the subarachnoid spaces of the head and spinal canal. Following intravascular administration, iohexol makes vessels opaque in its path of flow.
