Linseed oil, also known as flaxseed oil, is the oil extracted from the seeds of Linum usitatissimum. It is used as a nutritional supplement due to containing various essential fatty acids, being particularly rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), and as a polymerizing resin. Additionally, it has been used in combination with other active ingredients for the treatment of bloat (tympany) and other disorders in cattle, horses, sheep and goats; it has also been used as a laxative in horses. Historically, linseed oil, derived from flaxseed, has been used as a topical demulcent and emollient, as a laxative, and as a treatment for coughs, colds, and urinary tract infections.
