L-lysine (mono)hydrochloride is available as a nonprescription oral supplement. It is used as a pharmaceutical-grade product as a suppressant of recurrent herpes simplex infections and has also been indicated for the possibility of other therapeutic uses including cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis (2, 3). L-lysine in its hydrochloride salt form is also used as a protein-enhancing supplement to foods including breads and cereals.
