Madecassic acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid found in the aerial parts of Centella asiatica. It can also be found in Siphoneugena densiflora and Centella erecta plants. It has a role as an antioxidant and a plant metabolite. Madecassic acid is used in cosmetics for soothing, skin regeneration, and healing. Madecassic acid, as well as different extracts of Centella asiatica and its individual triterpene constituents (such as asiaticoside, madecassoside, and asiatic acid), has shown significant applications in the treatment of dermatoses and skin lesions such as excoriations, burn injuries, cutaneous scars (hypertrophic scars and keloid scars), and eczema, as well as in the healing process of skin wounds.
