Magnesium carbonate is indicated for use as an over the counter (OTC) antacid. It is also used is also used topically as a drying agent for hands in rock climbing, gymnastics, and weight lifting. Magnesium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form carbon dioxide and magnesium chloride thus neutralizing excess acid in the stomach. Efficacy of magnesium carbonate is demonstrated by successful neutralization of acid in the stomach. When used as a chalk, efficacy of magnesium carbonate was demonstrated by a reduction in friction.
