Magnesium oxide (MgO) is a naturally occurring inorganic compound. It is produced from magnesite ores, brines and seawater. It is also produced by dead heating or calcining magnesium hydroxide. It is a high-volume compound that has multiple uses, including but not limited to, an antacid and laxative, a nutritional supplement, an anticaking agent in foods, a firming agent, a release agent, a nutrient supplement, a pH control agent, environmental pollution abatement, and many other applications. As an antacid, magnesium oxide combines with water to form magnesium hydroxide. As a laxative, the magnesia suspension draws water into the intestines.
