Magnesium sulfate is used as an anticonvulsant, laxative, and electrolyte replenisher in the treatment of premature contractions of the uterus, preeclampsia and eclampsia, a food additive, and is as a soak for sore muscles. Intravenous administration of magnesium corrects magnesium deficiencies. It causes inhibition of muscles in the uterus resulting in decreases in frequency and force of contractions. When used as a laxative, in the form commonly referred to as Epsom salts, magnesium sulfate increases the flow of water into the intestine.
