Medetomidine is an α2-adrenoreceptor agonist with sedative, muscle relaxant, and analgesic properties used for restraint, sedation and analgesia associated with clinical examinations and procedures, minor surgery, and pre-anesthesia for veterinary use (cats and dogs). Medetomidine may be used in combination with butorphanol for sedation, analgesia, and as a premedicant to thiopentone anesthesia in dogs. Medetomidine also may be used in combination with butorphanol for sedation and analgesia, combined with both butorphanol and ketamine for general anesthesia, and as a premedication before alfaxalone/alfadolone for general anesthesia in cats.
