Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are a family of triglycerides that are a mixture of saturated fatty acids ranging from 6 to 12 carbon atoms. Specifically, they are mainly composed of caprylic acid (C8:0, approximately 80%), capric acid (C10:0, making up 20% to 50%), and smaller portions of caproic acid (C6:0, 1% to 2%)) and lauric acid (C12:0, 1% to 2%). These medium-chain triglycerides are a class of lipids where three intermediate-length saturated fats are bound to a glycerol backbone, forming triacylglycerols, also known as triglycerides. Due to their smaller molecular size, MCTs have lower melting points, lower viscosity, and greater water solubility than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs), and they remain liquid at room temperature.
