Mepyramine maleate is also a common ingredient of compound preparations for the symptomatic treatment of coughs and the common cold. It has also previously been used for short term treatment of insomnia, but was discontinued as ingredients in the over-the-counter (OTC) nighttime sleep aids were marketed in the U.S.
