Methionine, also known as L-methionine, is an essential amino acid included in amino-acid solutions used for parenteral nutrition. It is used for protein synthesis including the formation of SAMe, L-homocysteine, L-cysteine, taurine, and sulfate. Methionine also enhances the synthesis of glutathione and is used as an alternative to acetylcysteine in the treatment of paracetamol poisoning to prevent hepatotoxicity. It has also been given to lower urinary pH, as an adjunct in the treatment of liver disorders, and has been used in the assessment of hyperhomocysteinemia.
