Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a flammable liquid with a distinctive, disagreeable odor. It is made from blending chemicals such as isobutylene and methanol and has been used since the 1980s as an additive for unleaded gasoline to achieve more efficient burning. Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) can also be used to dissolve gallstones in patients for which surgical options are too risky. Patients treated in this way have MTBE delivered directly to the gallbladder through special tubes that are surgically inserted. Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) has not been approved for medical use in the US since 2015 but is still used as a nonsurgical option in some countries.
