Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to methylergonovine maleate (CAS RN 57432-61-8), and methylergonovine tartrate (3/1) (CAS RN 6209-37-6). Methylergonovine is an ergonovine homolog indicated for routine management of uterine atony and the prevention and control of excessive uterine bleeding and subinvolution of the uterus following vaginal childbirth. Methylergonovine is a semisynthetic ergot alkaloid that acts directly on the smooth muscle of the uterus and increases the tone, rate, and amplitude of rhythmic contractions through binding and the resultant antagonism of the dopamine D1 receptor inducing a swift and continuous tetanic uterotonic effect, shortening the third stage of labor and reducing blood loss.
