Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to miconazole nitrate (CAS RN 22832-87-7). Miconazole is indicated for the treatment of vaginal yeast infection and fungal infections of the skin. Miconazole nitrate, an imidazole antifungal, inhibits biosynthesis of ergosterol in the fungal cell wall membrane. Inhibition of ergosterol allows for accumulation of ergosterol precursors and toxic peroxides which lead to cytolysis of the cell.
