N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), or diethylnitrosamine, is used as a gasoline and lubricant additive, antioxidant, and stabilizer for industry materials. NDEA is also used for research purposes. When heated to decomposition, NDEA emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides. NDEA affects DNA integrity, probably by alkylation, and is used in experimental research to induce liver tumorigenesis. No evidence has been found that NDEA is manufactured commercially.
