Naltrexone is a specific opioid antagonist more potent than naloxone and has a longer duration of action to maintain abstinence after opioid withdrawal in detoxified formerly opioid-dependent patients. Naltrexone may be used as an adjunct to psychotherapy in maintaining abstinence after alcohol withdrawal in patients with alcohol dependence. Naltrexone hydrochloride is a pure opioid antagonist. It blocks opioid effects through competitive binding at opioid receptors.
