Naltrexone may be used as an adjunct to psychotherapy in maintaining abstinence after alcohol withdrawal in patients with alcohol dependence. Naltrexone hydrochloride is a pure opioid antagonist. It blocks opioid effects through competitive binding at opioid receptors.
