Nonane, also known as ShellSol 140, Nonyl hydride, and n-Nonane, is a straight chain alkane composed of 9 carbon atoms. It has a role as a volatile oil component and a plant metabolite. It is used as solvents, in jet fuel research, on the manufacture of paraffin products, as a component of gasoline, in organic synthesis, as a distillation chaser, and in biodegradable detergents. Nonane is a colorless, flammable liquid, occurring primarily in the component of the petroleum distillate fraction commonly called kerosene.
