Norelgestromin is a combination hormonal contraceptive indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women. The primary mechanism of action of combination hormonal contraceptives is inhibition of ovulation by suppression of gonadotropins. Norelgestromin inhibits estrone sulfatase, which converts sulfated steroid precursors to estrogen during pregnancy. Norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol suppress follicular development, induce changes to the endometrium (decreasing chances of implantation), and thickens cervical mucus which impedes sperm from reaching the uterus.
