Norgestrel is a synthetic steroidal progestin that is used in combination with ethinyl estradiol for oral contraception. Norgestrel is composed of a racemic mixture (dl) of two stereoisomers, dextronorgestrel (d-norgestrel) and levonorgestrel (l-norgestrel). However, only the levorotary enantiomer (levonorgestrel) is biologically active. Levonorgestrel is therefore considered twice as potent as norgestrel.
