Nortriptyline is used to treat symptoms of depression and has been used alone and in combination with other drugs to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorder, insomnia, post-therapeutic neuralgia, nerve pain, and as an aid in smoking cessation. Nortriptyline is tricyclic antidepressant. The mechanism of mood elevation is not completely understood but may involve inhibition of the reuptake of serotonin and/or norepinephrine.
