Oxcarbazepine is a mood stabilizing and anticonvulsant drug. The pharmacological activity of oxcarbazepine is primarily exerted through the 10- monohydroxy metabolite (MHD) of oxcarbazepine. The exact mechanism of action is not clear but oxcarbazepine and MHD appear to reduce seizures by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
