Oxytocin is a cyclic nonapeptide secreted by the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. It may be prepared from the gland of mammals or by synthesis (recombinant oxytocin). Like all other neurohypophysial hormones, oxytocin is composed of nine amino acids, with a disulfide bridge between the cystine 1 and 6 residues.
