Pentosan polysulfate sodium has been used in inflammatory conditions of the bladder, including interstitial cystitis enhancing the protective effect of mucins at the bladder surface. The exact mechanism of action is not known, but pentosan has been found to adhere to the bladder wall mucosal membrane, which may act as a buffer to prevent irritating solutes from reaching deeper cells. Pentosan has anticoagulant and fibrinolytic effects.
