Peppermint oil is used as a flavoring agent in foods, as a fragrance in hygienic or cosmetic products, and as an anti-itch and cooling agent in topical pharmaceutical products. In alternative medicine indications, peppermint oil has been used as an antispasmodic, an antiseptic, and as a herpes simplex virus (HSV)1 and HSV2 antiviral. Additionally, peppermint oil has been used to treat cramps, dyspepsia, nausea, the common cold, sore throat, and to relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), tension headaches. upper respiratory symptoms, and cough. It is also an active ingredient in topical analgesics for the relief of joint and muscle pain. In Europe, peppermint oil is approved as an herbal medicinal product for the symptomatic relief of minor spasms of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, flatulence, and abdominal pain, especially in patients with IBS, and for the symptomatic relief of mild tension-type headache.
