Phenyl salicylate, also known as Salol, is a salicylic acid derivative. It is used in oral preparations containing methenamine for the treatment of lower urinary tract infections. Salol has been used topically as a sunscreen. Phenyl salicylate today is mostly used in the manufacture of some polymers, lacquers, adhesives, waxes and polishes. Phenyl salicylate inhibits the activity of the enzyme known as cyclooxygenase (COX), which causes the formation of prostaglandins, substances which cause inflammation, swelling, pain, and fever.
