The monograph contains both the OEL and ADE. Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indicated for treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Piroxicam, an oxicam derivative, and piroxicam betadex are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and like that of other NSAIDs, the mechanism of action is not completely understood, but is thought to inhibit prostaglandin synthetase. The antiinflammatory effect of piroxicam may be a result of the inhibition the COX-1 enzyme, leading to the disruption of the production of prostaglandins. Piroxicam also inhibits the migration of leukocytes into sites of inflammation and prevents the formation of thromboxane A2, an aggregating agent, by the platelets.
