Polihexanide is a mixture of polybiguanides with various applications. It is used in cosmetics, and as an antiseptic agent with antibacterial antiviral properties, an algicide, a fungicide, a regulator, a sanitizer, a microbiocide. It is intended for use on kitchen countertops and other areas of food preparation, as a hard surface disinfectant, in swimming pools, as an indoor non-food preservative, as a terrestrial non-food preservative, in disinfectant wipes, in cosmetics and in agricultural applications. For bacteria, the lethal action is loss of essential cellular components as a direct consequence of cytoplasmic membrane damage. Polihexanide kills cells of all types.
