Potassium chlorate (also known as chloric acid) is a strong inorganic oxidizing agent used in matches, explosives, pyrotechnics, and bleaching. It has reported cosmetic uses including manufacturing toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorants, and as an oxidizing agent. It can also be used as an herbicide. In veterinary medicine, potassium chlorate is used as an oxidizing agent, antiseptic, and astringent. In human medicine, potassium chlorate was used in the past as an oxidizing agent in lozenges and gargles. It has also been used as a diuretic and cardiac stimulant. Potassium chlorate was formerly used as an antiseptic for the skin and mucous membranes and in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis.
