Potassium citrate is used to manage renal tubular acidosis, hypocitraturic calcium oxalate kidney stones and uric acid lithiasis. It is also used as a food additive, diuretic, expectorant, electrolyte replenisher, and systemic alkalizer. Both potassium and citrate are naturally occurring substances in nature and the human body. Potassium citrate increases the pH of urine and the potassium load of the urine. These changes create an environment less conducive to the crystallization of stone forming salts.
