Important, please not that the ADE only applies to potassium cyanide. Potassium cyanide is an unapproved homeopathic intended to relieve the symptoms of tongue ulcers. Cyanide reacts with the trivalent iron in cytochrome oxidase to give a relatively stable complex. This inhibits the enzyme and blocks the last step in oxidative phosphorylation. The result is a deficiency of mitochondrial ATP and cell death. Particularly sensitive tissues are those of the CNS and heart.
