Potassium sulfate, also called sulphate of potash or arcanite, is a non-flammable white crystalline salt that is soluble in water. The chemical compound is commonly used in fertilizers, providing both potassium and sulfur. Potassium is the major cation (positive ion) inside animal cells, while sodium is the major cation outside animal cells . In the pharmaceuticals industry, potassium is used to regulate hypokalemia as a primary condition or secondary to other medical conditions. In combination with sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate is used as an osmotic laxative indicated for the cleansing of the colon as a preparation for colonoscopy in adults.
Affygility Solutions has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) and control band assignment for this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This monograph also contains the acceptable daily exposure (ADE) value.
OEL Fastrac monographs are a cost-effective and convenient way to meet the requirements for PDEs (ADEs) contained in the EMA Guideline on setting health based exposure limits for use in risk identification in the manufacture of different medicinal products in shared facilities (EMA/CHMP/CVMP/SWP/169430/2012), as well as PIC/S and ANVISA requirements, and to obtain the following information:
