Prifinium is a quaternary ammonium, antimuscarinic agent with antispasmodic and antiemetic properties, with peripheral effects similar to those of atropine. Prifinium is used to relieve smooth muscle spasms. It is also indicated for the management of pain due to conditions including hypermotility of the gastrointestinal tract (gastritis, peptic ulcer, enteritis, post-gastrectomy syndrome colitis, irritable bowel syndrome), spasms of the biliary tract (cholecystitis, cholelithiasis), and spasms of the urinary tract (urinary stones, bladder tenesmus, cystitis and pyelitis). Prifinium also works as a premedication for endoscopic gastric or gastrointestinal procedures and for the relief of dysmenorrhea and vomiting. Prifinium is approved as a veterinary drug in some locations.
