Primaquine is an 8-aminoquinoline antimalarial that is effective as a tissue schizonticide against intrahepatic forms of all types of malaria parasite. It is indicated for the radical cure and prevention of relapse of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale malarias following treatment with a blood schizonticide. It has also been used to prevent transmission of falciparum malaria by those returning to areas where there is a potential for reintroduction of malaria.
