Pyrvinium, as pyrvinium pamoate, is an anthelmintic effective for pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis). Pyrvinium pamoate is indicated in the treatment of pinworm infestations but has generally been superseded by other drugs. Pyrvinium’s anticancer properties are currently under investigation. Pyrvinium pamoate is the salt of a cyanin dye which exerts its anthelmintic activity by inhibiting oxygen uptake causing respiratory inhibition in the parasite. It also interferes with the absorption of exogenous glucose; when the parasite's endogenous reserves are depleted, the parasite dies.
