Resorcinol has keratolytic properties and has been used, usually with sulfur, in topical preparations as hair dyes and for the treatment of acne, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and other skin disorders, although other treatments are generally preferred. Resorcinol has also been used in preparations for the treatment of anorectal disorders, often complexed with bismuth compounds. Resorcinol works by helping to remove hard, scaly, or roughened skin. Resorcinol is used topically to treat pain and itching caused by minor cuts and scrapes, burns, insect bites, poison ivy, sunburn, or other skin irritations.
