Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to retinyl palmitate (CAS RN 79-81-2) and retinyl acetate (CAS RN 127-47-9). Retinol (vitamin A) is a yellow, fat-soluble, antioxidant vitamin that is important in vision and bone growth. It belongs to the family of chemical compounds known as retinoids. Retinol is ingested in a precursor form; animal sources (milk and eggs) contain retinyl esters, whereas plants (carrots, spinach) contain provitamin A carotenoids. Vitamin A is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of vitamin A deficiency. Retinol and its esters, including retinyl palmitate, are used in cosmetic products such as face and eye creams, body lotions, sun lotions, lip products, and baby creams.
