Riluzole is a glutamate antagonist used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The mechanism by which riluzole exerts its therapeutic effects in patients with ALS is not known. The mechanism of action of riluzole may involve blockade of glutamatergic transmission, as suggested by its anticonvulsant profile.
