Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to Rutoside sulfate (CAS RN 108916-86-5) and Rutoside trihydrate (CAS RN 250249-75-3). The name rutoside, also known as rutin, has been drawn from the plant Ruta graveolens whose aerial parts contain rutin. Rutoside (quercetin-3-O-rutoside, 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)- 5,7-dihydroxy-3-[ a-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1®6)-b-D-glucopyranosyloxy]-4H-chromen-4-one) is a citrus flavonoid abundantly found in plants such as passion flower, buckwheat, tea, apricots, cherries, grapes, grapefruits, onion, plums, oranges, and apple. Chemically, it is a glycoside comprising of flavonolic aglycone quercetin, along with the disaccharide rutinose. It has demonstrated a number of pharmacological activities including antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, cytoprotective, vasoprotective, anticarcinogenic, neuroprotective and cardioprotective activities.
