Safinamide is a slow acting monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitor indicated as adjunctive treatment to levodopa/carbidopa in patients with Parkinson’s disease experiencing “off” episodes. The precise mechanism responsible for the effects of safinamide in Parkinson’s disease is not known. Safinamide inhibits MAO-B, which inhibits the metabolism of dopamine. It is thought inhibition of catabolism of dopamine leads to greater amounts in the brain.
