Salicylamide has antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects similar to those of salicylate. It is used in the treatment of minor aches and pains. It is used in over-the-counter medications in combination with other drugs including aspirin, caffeine, and acetaminophen. Salicylamide acts as an anti-inflammatory agent (non-steroidal in nature). In addition to antiinflammatory actions, it also has analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions. This occurs by blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase. Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis accounts for the analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions. Other mechanisms may contribute to the anti-inflammatory effects.
