Sea buckthorn oil (CAS RN 225234-03-7) may be extracted from the seed or the pulp of common sea buckthorn (Hippophaes rhamnoides), also called a Siberian pineapple, a thorny, dioecious shrub (or tree) in the oleaster family (Elaeagnacea). Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides, Elaeagnaceae) is distinguished from Alder buckthorn bark (Rhamnus frangula, also known as Frangula bark and Buckthorn bark) and from Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica (Rhamnaceae)). The name sea buckthorn may be hyphenated to avoid confusion with the buckthorns in Rhamnaceae family. Sea buckthorn is also known as sandthorn, sallowthorn, or seaberry.
