Serotonin is indicated for the prevention of involuntary spasmodic jerky contraction of groups of muscles after a patient is rescued via cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Serotonin, which is synthesized in the body from the essential amino acid tryptophan, is found in the brain, blood platelets, and throughout the gastrointestinal tract. It acts as a biochemical mediator and its roles include involvement in central nervous system neurotransmission, stability of blood flow, vascular spasm, and gastrointestinal motility.
