SN-38, an active metabolite of the more water soluble drug irinotecan, is indicated for the treatment of colorectal cancer. It is 1000-times more cytotoxic than irinotecan. Because of poor solubility, it is not a viable therapeutic agent; however, it is part of antibody drug conjugates (ADC)s and liposomal formulations currently under development for the treatment of cancer. SN-38 hydrochloride, a quinoline alkaloid, inhibits DNA topoisomerase 1 inhibitor and causes cell death similarly to irinotecan.
