Spectinomycin is recommended as an alternative for the treatment of uncomplicated or disseminated gonococcal infections in patients that cannot tolerate cephalosporins or quinolones. Spectinomycin is effective against gonococcal infections, but is more expensive than other medications and is available only as an injectable dosage form.
