Sulbactam sodium is a beta-lactamase inhibitor with very weak antibacterial action. It is used in combination with other antibiotics, including ampicillin, cefoperazone, and amoxicillin to extend the effectiveness of the second antibiotic. It is marketed in combination with drugs around the world as a generic and under many brand names. Sulbactam sodium is a penicillanic acid sulfone derivative and beta-lactamase inhibitor with antibacterial activity. Sulbactam sodium contains a beta-lactam ring and irreversibly binds to beta-lactamase at or near its active site. This protects other beta-lactam antibiotics from beta-lactamase catalysis. This drug is used in conjunction with beta-lactamase susceptible penicillins to treat infections caused by beta-lactamase producing organisms.
