Please note, this OEL/ADE monograph also applies to sulfamethazine sodium (CAS RN 1981-58-4) and sulfamethazine bisulfate (CAS RN 24540-76-9). Sulfamethazine sodium is the administered salt form of sulfamethazine. Sulfamethazine, also known as sulfadimidine, is indicated for the control and treatment of diseases in beef cattle, swine, chickens, and turkeys. Sulfamethazine is a sulfonamide drug that inhibits bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) for binding to dihydropteroate synthetase (dihydrofolate synthetase) an intermediate of tetrahydrofolic acid synthesis. Tetrahydrofolic acid is required for the synthesis of purines and dTMP and inhibition of its synthesis inhibits bacterial growth. Pyrimethamine and trimethoprim inhibit dihydrofolate reductase, another step in tetrahydrofolic acid synthesis and therefore, act synergistically with the sulfonamides. Sulfamethazine is bacteriostatic in nature. Inhibition of dihydrofolic acid synthesis decreases the synthesis of bacterial nucleotides and DNA.
Affygility Solutions has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) and control band assignment for this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This monograph also contains the acceptable daily exposure (ADE) value.
OEL Fastrac monographs are a cost-effective and convenient way to meet the requirements for PDEs (ADEs) contained in the EMA Guideline on setting health based exposure limits for use in risk identification in the manufacture of different medicinal products in shared facilities (EMA/CHMP/CVMP/SWP/169430/2012), as well as PIC/S and ANVISA requirements, and to obtain the following information:
