Sulfamethoxazole/ Trimethoprim is indicated for treatment of various infections including acute infective exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute otitis media, HIV infection - pneumocystis pneumonia and prophylaxis, Shigellosis, traveler's diarrhea, urinary tract infections (UTI), and Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia. Sulfamethoxazole is a bacteriostatic sulfonamide antibiotic that interferes with folic acid synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Trimethoprim is often used in combination with sulfamethoxazole due to their complementary and synergistic mechanisms, but may be used as a monotherapy in the treatment and/or prophylaxis of urinary tract infections.
