Sulfuric acid is contained in some pharmaceutical products for the treatment of aphthous ulcers (canker sores). When used as part of a combination product together with sulfonated phenolics, it can serve as a chemical cautery agent that provides controlled, focal debridement and sterilization of necrotic tissues.
