Taurolidine is used as an anti-infective agent for catheters and infections in the body cavity and is under development as an anticancer drug. Taurolidine is rapidly metabolized releasing three active methylol groups that react with the bacterial cell wall, causing cell lysis, and reacting with bacterial endotoxins. As an anticancer drug, it may alter the adherence of, cause self-destruction of, and alter the blood supply to cancer cells.
